Vintage Jenny | Chevron Block from The Cutting Table Quilt Blog - A Blog for Quilters by Quilters

It doesn’t get easier than this classic quilt block! Using Layer Cakes cut into half-square triangles, the chevron quilt block is the perfect project for a new beginner quilter! Even if you’ve been stitching up quilts for awhile now, this simple pattern offers a unique opportunity to quilt in a hurry (not like any of us would EVER wait until the last minute to make a handmade gift).

To make this into a full quilt, all you’ll need is a solid layer cake and a printed layer cake – but the good news is you can truly make ...

Lakeview Terrace Quilt from The Cutting Table Quilt Blog - A Blog for Quilters by Quilters

Lakeview Terrace Quilt by Jenny Doan of the Missouri Star Quilt Company.

I’ve never met a sunset I didn’t love.

Big-city sunsets always impress, with skyscrapers silhouetted against a golden sky. Winter sunsets transform freshly-fallen snow into acres of pink cotton candy.

But nothing compares to sunset on the lake. Those colors dance on rippling water, creating a light show like nothing on earth!

This week Jenny is whipping up a Lakeview Terrace jelly roll quilt with colorful bargello chevrons that remind us of sunset-tipped waves. What a dream!

Butterfly House Quilt from The Cutting Table Quilt Blog - A Blog for Quilters by Quilters

The Butterfly House Quilt Tutorial from Missouri Star Quilt Co.

A butterfly is the pickiest of guests.
Invite her for brunch, and she won’t eat a bite—unless you serve her favorite food. (Milkweed for monarchs; white cedar for hairstreaks.)

On evening strolls, the weather must be perfect. If it’s too chilly, your fluttery friend will simply stop, drop, and nap.

And no matter how lovely the guest room, it won’t tempt Miss Butterfly. Oh, she may request a posh butterfly house. But rest assured she’ll never step inside.

This week Jenny is stitching up a layer cake butterfly quilt fit for a queen. She’s ...

Goose Tracks Quilt from The Cutting Table Quilt Blog - A Blog for Quilters by Quilters

Goose Tracks Quilt by Missouri Star Quilt Company.

There’s a beautiful, old Goose Tracks quilt at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C.

It was made 150 years ago by Mrs. Ellen Parsons of Shelbyville, Tennessee. A hand-written note explains: “Mrs. Parsons planted and grew the cotton in her garden. She picked the cotton and spun it into thread. She wove the threads into cloth to make the lining for the quilt. She pieced and quilted it by hand.” Phew! That’s a lot of work!

Ask the Panel from quiltaholic

I love panel quilts. They allow you to get on with quilting without having actually to make a complicated quilt and they give you scope for experimentation without worrying about messing up a quilt that took hours to piece or wasting time on a bit of calico that you don’t know what to do with when it is finished.

I also once went on a thread painting course that was a bit of a waste of time but when I started to use a longarm I realised that panel quilts were the ideal material to practise on.

On this ...
